How Often Should You Seal Concrete?
July 3, 2026
Concrete Foundations Adelaide one of the biggest myths about concrete is that once it’s poured, you can forget about it.
I wish that were true.
Concrete is tough. That’s exactly why people choose it. But tough doesn’t mean maintenance-free.
After working on driveways, patios and exposed aggregate across Adelaide for more than twenty years, I’ve noticed something interesting. The concrete that still looks fantastic after fifteen or twenty years usually hasn’t had expensive repairs.
It’s simply been looked after.
And sealing plays a bigger role than most homeowners realise.
There’s no magic number
People often ask us, “How often should I reseal my driveway?”
They’re hoping for a simple answer.
Every three years.
Every five years.
Job done.
The reality is, it depends on how the concrete is used and what it’s exposed to.
A driveway that sits in full afternoon sun, copes with daily traffic and gets splashed with oil every weekend will age differently from a shaded backyard patio that’s only used when friends come around for a barbecue.
That’s why no experienced concreter gives exactly the same answer for every property.
Adelaide has a habit of testing concrete
One thing we’ve noticed is that Adelaide’s weather quietly works away at concrete all year round.
Summer brings intense UV exposure and long periods of heat.
Winter brings moisture.
Neither causes immediate damage, but together they slowly wear away the protection on the surface.
If you’re closer to the coast around Glenelg, Semaphore or Henley Beach, salt in the air adds another layer of exposure.
Concrete doesn’t suddenly fail because it wasn’t sealed.
It simply starts ageing faster than it needs to.
Exposed aggregate deserves a little extra attention
If you’ve invested in exposed aggregate, sealing becomes even more worthwhile.
Not because the concrete is weaker.
Because you’ve chosen a decorative finish that you actually want to keep looking good.
A quality sealer helps bring out the natural colours in the stone, makes cleaning easier and slows down staining from leaves, tyre marks and oil.
The funny thing is, homeowners often think their exposed aggregate has “faded.”
More often than not, it’s simply overdue for resealing.
How do you know it’s time?
Forget the calendar for a moment.
Your driveway usually tells you.
Here’s where people get caught out.
They wait until stains won’t come out or the surface starts looking tired before thinking about maintenance.
By then, the concrete has already spent years without much protection.
Instead, keep an eye out for a few simple signs:
- Water soaks into the surface instead of beading.
- Colours start looking dull or washed out.
- Oil stains become harder to remove.
- The surface feels dry and chalky rather than smooth.
Those are usually better indicators than counting the years.
Sealing isn’t about making concrete shiny
A lot of people picture glossy driveways when they hear the word “sealer.”
That’s only one option.
Modern sealers come in different finishes, from natural-looking matt products through to higher-gloss finishes, depending on the appearance you’re after.
The goal isn’t making the driveway look artificial.
It’s protecting the investment you’ve already made.
We’ve seen plenty of concrete that was structurally perfect but looked older than it should have simply because nobody thought about sealing it.
Concrete is built to last, but even the best driveway appreciates a little maintenance now and then. Spending a small amount on resealing every few years is usually far more affordable than dealing with permanent stains, fading or premature wear later on.
At Pro Concreting Adelaide, we don’t recommend sealing because it’s another service to sell. We recommend it because we’ve seen the difference it makes after twenty years of watching Adelaide driveways age. If you’re not sure whether your concrete is due for resealing, we’re happy to take a look and give you straightforward advice with no pressure and no obligation.
